At the beginning of the 2009/2010 school year, I was contacted by Debbie Wallingford, the family sciences teacher at the Phoenixville Area Middle School (PAMS). Debbie decided to shake things up a bit this year by having her sewing classes make a pillowcase for the ConKerr Cancer program. The idea has been embraced wholeheartedly by the school community, and hundreds of pillows have already been made. The class time devoted to the cause is also being counted towards the students' newly implemented community service requirement. Because I believe so strongly in the organization and its mission, I have been making pillowcase kits available to the kids - and now, to anyone else who might be interested in putting one together. I'm also happy to announce that Chester County Quilting is now an official drop-off point for the ConKerr Cancer organization. Whether you buy a kit here, or make a pillowcase out of fabric from your own stash, I will be happy to accept your donations and make sure they get to ConKerr Cancer. All pillowcases are given to children with cancer or another serious illness IN OUR AREA. I'll be keeping a log of all our donations - see below. Continuing in 2011, American Patchwork and Quilting magazine is sponsoring the One Million Pillowcase Challenge. AP&Q's goal is to show the world how wonderful and giving quilters are by keeping track of the pillows that are donated to any number of local organizations in need. Chester County Quilting is a participating shop, and all pillowcases donated to the ConKerr Cancer cause will be added to the total. Personally, I think they're going to get past this goal and probably wind up with five million pillowcases! To make your life just a bit easier, I'm including copies of the four pillowcase patterns that AP&Q has posted on their website. Just click on any of the pictures below, and you'll get the directions to make it. And just in case you think your pillowcase has to be extra fancy, don't worry. Use just one fabric and you'll be just fine. As a matter of fact, that's MY preference! Please help if you can. Gentle reminder: please make sure your donated pillowcase is turned in after it's been washed, folded, and placed inside a plastic bag. This is a requirement of the receiving hospitals. Thank-you! |

The Phoenixville Area Middle School (PAMS) is soliciting donations of kits to make pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer. Some kids want to make more than two pillowcases, while some kids or their families cannot afford to purchase kits. If you'd care to make a donation, you can make up kits yourself or, if you prefer, you can drop your fabrics off here at the shop and I'll make them up into kits on your behalf. Each pillowcase kit is made up of two cheerful fabrics - 3/4 of a yard for the main part of the pillow, plus 1/3 of a yard for the border cuff. Please call me if you have any questions. Don't forget, ConKerr Cancer is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. All donations of fabric and/or pillowcases are tax deductible under current IRS rules. Thank-you! |
